Grey Haven, September Show!!

Hey Grey Haven-ers,

Well, here we go again for the 4th time! The September show is set for the 19th.

This show is going to be a little different for a few reasons:

1) After a few conversations with the people at Workplay, we have decided to move the Grey Haven Concerts to a different venue. That venue is Urban Standard, located on 2nd Ave North. It turns out that Workplay needed us to sell twice the amount of pre-show tickets in order to continue having our shows there. We were not at a position to risk everyone practicing and then having to cancel the show because of low ticket sales. So, the good people at Urban Standard stepped up!

2) Because of the size of Urban, we are going to have to be a little more conservative when it comes to the amount of instruments we have on stage at one. Then again, Limitivity produces Creativity. Think about having a percussionist in the audience, a guitarist sitting in a chair, anything you want! Let's rock the place out!

SO, let the entries begin! Same thing as all the other times: 10 artists, 2 songs, mandatory run-through the week of (well, as mandatory as we get), and a lot of community and creativity!

You guys make me love what I do!

I'm not really that strongly involved in Greyhaven, since I'm a drummer and not a songwriter, so I'm wondering how to resign my blogging privileges here so no one has to accidentally read my ravings about animal rights...

A lot is happening for Grey Haven this week. Let's just say a very kind man named Branden Lower has decided to make all of our hopes and dreams come true. Over the next 6 months, we will be receiving a new site, poster, print-outs, t-shirts, and much more. We are hoping that we can really start allowing Grey Haven to be a serious part of the music community in Birmingham.

Deadline Looming / UPDATE

Firstly,

The first deadline for the July 11 show is coming up soon (24th).

So far, the set songwriters are as follows:

There are a couple other songwriter who are getting back to me on technical stuff, and after that, we may have 1 more spot to fill. So if anyone is interested, now would be the time (Come on Girls, represent!!!)

CONGRATULATIONS GREY HAVENERS!! WE'VE MADE IT TO OUR 3RD SHOW!!!!

Thirdly,

3 is a pretty significant number. So we're going to celebrate by dressing up...seriously.

July 11 is now a Formal Event for all performers.

You don't have to wear a tux or evening gown (I mean if you did, it would look awesome), but just look AWESOME.

(I really like the idea of dressing up to perform.)

Tammy will be sending out a message to everyone soon, announcing the date of the run through, and the guidelines that have to do with that.

Workplay Concert: First DEADLINE

It's about that time again people!

Grey Haven is scheduled to have another concert on July 11th at Workplay Theatre!!

Due to the success of our first 2 show, Birmingham Magazine is featuring this Grey Haven show in their July issue. Good job everyone!!

Now here comes the first deadline:

JUNE 24 we need to know the list of songwriters performing in the show. We will be taking the first ten who submit their interest.

Songwriters, here our your rules:

1) You are in charge of your group practicing.

2) You must provided a full input list for each of your songs, 10 days before the performance.

3) If you are a new songwriter, you HAVE to collaborate with an established Grey Haven Member in both of your songs.

Musicians here are your rules:

1) You can only collaborate with 2 songwriter (not including yourself). This makes sure that a musicians time does not get abused.

2) Please attend the practices the songwriters set.

NEXT DEADLINE - THIS FRIDAY

may 9 is the deadline for all songwriters to email greyhavencommunity@gmail.com the following information:

1. send two word documents: song 1 & song 2.
2. for each song, list who is playing what instrument, and whether the instrument has a pick-up or if it needs to be mic'd acoustically.

songwriters: if you need help organizing your individual practices, let us know & we'll see how we can help!

a run-through rehearsal will be on monday, may 19 -- the location is TBA. this is going to be a really fun & productive time for everyone to play through songs for the whole group, getting feedback & making last-minute changes if necessary.

Kick it back Old School (sort of)

Hey Grey Haven,
I’ve been talking to some music industry goobers frequently as of late and I keep hearing how the Internet is such a driving force for the indie music scene and “blah blah blah.” One concept I keep hearing over and over though is that the most successful indie outfits are typically a little innovative in the way they use the World Wide Web and etc… Which I guess in my opinion is a “no brainer”, but for some reason after hearing this continuously I began to brainstorm a format by which to combine Folk and the Interweb into an innovative Booking Campaign. All the sudden the mixture all made sense and I questioned why no one I have ever heard of has tried what I am about to explain.

The idea is to have artists play intimate gigs on the street in a circulating manner. Here’s an example, don’t pay to much attention to details but just the concept- Ex. I play a show at 6 p.m. at 5 Points in downtown Bham in front of Starbucks on Monday; Tuesday I am scheduled to play 7p.m. on 15th Street and 12th Avenue in Tuscaloosa; Wednesday I am scheduled to play 8p.m. on 18th Street and 2nd Avenue in Atlanta; Thursday I play 6p.m. on 19th Street and 24th Avenue at the University of Georgia, etc… Then Pedro and the Kittens are scheduled to play at the same times and locations but on different days. And then the Dinosaurs play at the same times and locations but on a different days than everyone else . The idea is to have someone there when people expect them to be there. So theoretically the streets become a dependable venue for good indie music.
One obvious reason the web will be vital is in promoting the shows. But also the web will be used for video blogs of the shows and podcasts and all the other crazy cool stuff we can do on the Internet… The shows will be acoustic, have a very folk texture, and will be uncivilized in manner. But the use of the Internet will provide a very innovative approach for something considered “old school”. I believe this combination could cause some magic, but I can only see if people want to taketh pat.

I believe we can really draw in communities and businesses to be involved if we allow them to provide publications, posters, products, and etc… at the shows, which in return will provide a larger crowd since we can use them as a way of promoting. Even businesses like Starbucks would provide coffee or something just so we would draw a crowd in front of their store. (Just an example.) Anyway, I understand that something that occurs regularly such as this may cause some up roar and people complaining about the shows wherever. But that kind of stuff can be worked out, especially if we allow the communities and businesses to be involved in the first place. Also, the shows could just be once a week, or even once a month I guess, but they just need to be something dependable that people expect.

OH and the way you can be compensated is just opening up a guitar case and asking for tips… it works… Even selling merch on the street may work, but I think that may be illegal… haha. Directing people to your website and handing out rave cards with your site can provide income as well.

This is all I have for now. The only way this will work is if tons of people are involved in so many ways- from promoting to performing to negotiating. I wanted to see if anyone in Grey Haven wanted to be involved first. So shoot me an e-mail or comment on this blog and state your ideas, whether you love it or hate it, what you think would be better, what will not work, if you think you can help, if you want to play, if you are having surgery, if you are addicted to steroids, etc… Everyone from musicians to web/graphic designers to business peeps will be vital to getting this going and making it a success. This is a brand new idea and I need feedback. PEACE.

Workplay Show: The Planning Starts Now

Ok everyone, the next Workplay Show is set for May the 24th.

I'm freakn pumped.

The last show went incredibly well, but I think we decided can do a lot better on the planning side of things.

So that means starting to plan now.

Tammy (God Bless her), has volunteered to be the receiver and sender of the majority of e-mails for Grey Haven. So, if you have any questions about anything, please address her and e-mail greyhavencommunity@gmail.com . I will then forward on the e-mail to her.

FIRST THING

Ok, the first thing we need to organize the show is a list of interested songwriters. So here's are first deadline:

BY APRIL 25TH (aka this coming friday) WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN PERFORMING IN THE GREY HAVEN SHOW.

Watch the Grass Grow #1

If you'll notice, we added a new section to the side-menu. "Watch the Grass Grow" is the area where we will be placing all the Grey Haven Video Projects.

The videos are inspired by the great Vincent Moon and they go like this: Place a musician in an interesting environment and film them playing a song.

Easy enough.

If you are a member of Grey Haven and would like to participate in a Watch the Grass Grow video, send an e-mail to greyhavencommunity@gmail.com with the names of the people you would like to be involved and any ideas you have for a location.
